Due to COVID-19, Camp Kubena has made the difficult decision to cancel its overnight summer camp program for 2020. The decision was announced on May 20 by the Camp Kubena Advisory Committee. Despite Gov. Abbott’s announcement that summer camps can open on June 1, the Camp Kubena Advisory Committee decided the restrictions under which Camp Kubena would have to operate make it impractical to open camp this year.
In a letter to group leaders and parents, Camp Kubena Executive Director Rob Clift gives details about some of the guidelines such as the use of masks and PPE, restrictions of cabin occupancy, no cultural dancing or social large group activities like opening campfire or hayrides, and other restrictions. He also explained the significant and additional burdens that would have been placed on camp staff, including quarantining them on site for 7 to 10 days before the camp season begins. It would have also necessitated that camp staff would be required to remain onsite except for supervised visits to town while wearing masks. “It’s not the camp we know and love,” Rob said.
